Tantalus, it's a good book for the most part....external vs. internal power.

Of the books I listed any suggestions?

^Interesting.
The only Steinbeck to have disappointed me somewhat.
Found it to be too melodramatic.

I find that Steinbeck's narratives are wonderfully clear and restrained, but agree that he has a tendency to not rein in some of the more breathlessly melodramatic moments of his characters. They seem more like lurid, hammy, period Hollywood players at times, and it really takes away from the basic humanity that he was so skilled at endowing his work with.

because i am now DONE with school, i can actually get back to reading for pleasure. this makes me extremely excited. because i always like having reading "projects" for extended breaks like this, i've decided to tackle the Modern Library's 100 best lists, first up - Ulysses by James Joyce! (even though that's eerily near what i study in school... can never escape!)

yeah, i'm actually not much of a fan of james joyce. i find it a little too pretentiously "intellectual", but i'll give it a go. maybe i'll cheat and start off with the people's 2nd choice (i've read the 1st too many times already) - The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand.
