ok, first things first... never use vi. vi is evil. `export EDITOR=emacs` is your best friend.

Actually, System V is not a descendant of BSD.

while you are not wrong, i am not wrong either since Bill Joy actually worked on AT@T unix at B. That was the days that you could rewrite the whole kernel on the weekend. Later on, most of the System V and Solaris applications are from BSD.

i figured i'd resurrect this since i just installed red hat. i poked around a little tonight but didnt get much done. im going to read the getting started guide tommorrow. i gotta say they don't make it easy though
