The first free Iraqi election in 50 years is being hailed as a success by Iraqis and members of the international community.

"This is the greatest day in the history of this country," Iraqi national security adviser Mowaffak al-Rubaie

Insurgents had vowed to wash the streets with "voters' blood," and more than a dozen attacks killed at least 28 people and wounded 71 others. But that's a far cry from streets filled with blood.

A success? I wouldn't say that just yet. The true test of a democracy is the second election. The first lets the people choose the government, the second lets us see if that government respects democracy.

I'm also scratching my head as to why the enumeration process and many other details of the electoral system in Iraq are being kept under wraps. Hmmmmmmmm.....?

I found this article written by Sami Ramadani (a political refugee from Saddam Hussein's regime) to be an interesting read

Not exactly a success, but a little different to Saddams elections

I hear a lot of people discrediting these elections as "bogus" because the Sunis did not participate. I tend to think that's the Sunis' own problem. I expect this group formed to write the consititution will invite Suni input anyway...

Another sharp attack against this election is that the Americans have divided Iraq along ethnic lines by using the Iraqi army to divide and conquor. I wonder if Iraqis feel more attachment to their nation or their ethnicity.

Salahadin was a Kurd. I'm sure they can pull it together.
