the job i'm going to do requires school, so for me, it isn't over rated.
If i was going to go into the business/company world, i don't think i'd spend the same amount of time at school.

School can be over rated depending on what you want to do. I'm going for a career change pretty quick here and school is definitely not over rated as I would not be able to get into my chosen profession without schooling.

I'm an assistant to the president ( not his secretary it's very different there is another lady with that position )

Actually that does make you a secretary... the only difference is you seem more of a "Personal" assistant...

I am sure you were hired for brains...

Meh whatever people......if u are all able to make good money without an education then thats awesome for you........but u guys are the minority.

Statistics show that people with a university degree make more over there lifetime then (MOST) people who do not.

I highly doubt that any very sucessful company is going to pay their administrative assistant 60K a year without that person have some kinda qualifications........I could be wrong but it doesnt sound realistic.

Anyways congrats to all of u that have "made it" without an education, but Im gonna continue to advocate post secondary cuz I know its made my life 100% better.

ok... I didn't care to comment on this until now.

1. Having a degree is a positive thing. It doesn't gurantee you anything.. but it can't be a bad thing.

2. Having no degree doesn't mean you'll make less money than anyone depending on what you think is good money or lots of money.

3. Yes.. there is a general correlation between in income averages between people with a degree Vs without. People with degrees in GENERAL will make more over an average lifetime.

Ok so here's my analogy on this.

Let's use a club.

A degree is like a VIP card.

Let's say you're about to hit this BOMB_ASS club. There is a line up.

People with a degree or VIP card will line up in the VIP line.. chances are.. they'll get in before the regular people as expected. Those in the reg line up can expect to wait a bit longer.. maybe even forever. Thoes again with the VIP cards will get it pretty quickly.

Then ... you got Presto & Low_Rollah who drive up... no degree.. no VIP card.. but walk on right on in.

There is always that odd chance that some people with no credentials has mad hookups and know how to network themselves to exceed those with degrees because of street smarts.

Now who own's the club? Could be Low_Rollah? Could be a guy with a PhD? Who knows.

So basically... having a degree or not doesn't mean anything that's 100%. Street Smarts are very different than acedemic smarts. But both can be very valuable assets without a doubt.

Look at Jimmy Pattison.

I believe that its who you know not what you know that may get you in on the bottom floor somewhere..

however when you are well into your career and fighting for that executive position wth someone else for the job they will take the guy with the masters or the degree or whatever edge they have in education everytime...

^ there is no doubt again that degrees will get you jobs.

When an HR department hires... they look at what's on paper. Anyone can say on their resume they've done this and that.. but a degree tells a person that this individual has committed time and dedicated resources to master whetever they are studying. They know that a MINIMUM standard has been acquired and achieved by this person.

They go by your certifcation AND experience if any.

In the corporate world that's how they hire. Very rarely do they hire a person for the same job without a degree unless they had an incredible reputation or they were head hunted.

But not all great jobs are corporate now are they? And not all business owners have degrees now do they?

There are just so many options for people with or without a degree to acquire money. Period.

Yeah the people who honestly believe that without a degree/diploma you cant make good money, are totally kidding themselves. It depends on your attitude, and your aptitude, and what exactly you are putting your mind into when it comes to employment.

I fully agree^^

a degree means nothing if you have no motivation to use it to the full potential.

but if you are a highly motivated person with no degree, you can do big things too.

and an exec assistant is much much more than a desk clerk.

How old are you?

What do you own?

Where have you traveled to?

What kind of car do you have?

How many RRSPs do you have?

etc

etc
etc
etc

You aren`t 18. You are old enough to have all of those things and still get an education. You`ve worked at a beer and wine store.

Whippee.

Less and Less people with degrees are making money in BC. Stats prove this.

Stop acting like your South Surrey ass is better than everyone.

HAHA u know nothing about me so please dont pretend to.

Edit.......I have no desire to share my personal achievements with people who mean nothing to me. I dont need to justify myself to someone like u.

You are without a doubt the most bitter unhappy person I have encountered in my life.

I totally agree..........Im not saying its impossible to be successful without a degree...............Life experience alone can get u far in life..........................I know people who are proof of this.

In my own case though I feel that I, myself would NOT be successful without a degree......i didnt go straight to post secondary from HS.....I worked for 3 years........in retail management..............I could have slowly worked up the ladder and became a district manager making 40k a year......but I didnt like the area of being a slave to a clothing store for my whole life.........If I didnt return to school that is what my life had in store.

thats awesome....good for him and good for u.

My younger brother also has managed to make fat cash without any schooling................but once AGAIN I feel that for MYSELF university is the best option.

And you are a fxcking lying skank that has lied on this website since day one.

As for your "property" in *south surrey*, I didn`t know you could buy co-ops. Congrats though.

Getting fired from a beer and wine store sure is "degree" worthy.

Its really funny that u have absolutely no idea what u are talking about. If u actually knew anything about me or my life u would realize how retarded u sound.

to add to that...

Not every person has the drive + ability to be entrprenurial and start their own business and build an empire. That takes tremendous commitment & dedication and will probably even take years off your life.

Lots of people have the ability to maybe build from scratch a company like Seaspan or the Jim Pattison Group... but Why???

It's all personal preference on how you want you life to be... I know I could do it.. but I don't want to. I wanna party, travel.. have a good life and be the person I want to be. Doing what Pattison did would break my back and pull me away from what i already love on a daily basis.

Lots of people have the ability to do anything.. to execute it you need passion , drive , commitment and the decication that's all... .

Or .. get a degree... get a pretty good job and live life the way you want to. Or don't get one and do your best to excel.

So many paths, so many options...

That's why I find this thread kinda lame if your going to criticize someone based on education or what they are doing with their lives.

I will however criticize people who talk like they're big time... and do nothing about it.. or somone who doesn't pursue their realistic dreams and goals because they are lazy and become scrubs. <-- to me.. what's the point in life! (very unmotivating and sad)

People are free to do whatever the hell they want......I dunno why Im getting jumped all over for saying that University is a good thing.......haha only on CV
