I use it now for about 30-40% of my telephoning and I spend about $1.40 a month.

apparently the ability to Skype-in is going to happen this year. When it does, it might be the only thing I use for phoning.

Man oh man, do I love skype.

Skype IN is now available, but there are no Canadian numbers.

As soon as they do, I'm ditching my VOIP phone and using nothing but skype for all my calling.

Phone service for $49/YEAR, including voicemail, accesible from any computer. The INSTANT I'm able to get a Vancouver number, I'm getting a USP cordless phone and this will be all I need for phone service for a long time.

I'm ***king stoked! $4/month for a "landline" that I can move with my computer and 2.7¢ /minute for outgoing calls anywhere in north america and europe, free to other skype users.

I seriously can't wait.

Factor in linking skype numbers to your address book and calling anyone with a click.

this would only be useful when you have more friends and relatives in Asia or Europe.

if it was more reliable than a landline to Malaysia, then it would also be useful.

however, if the landline in a remote part of the world connects up by satellite phone, then the quality is gonna be shixit.

It's useful to me. I love it!

I use it for all my calling and pay way less than a landline.

When they release vancouver phone numbers, I'm gonna ditch my voip phone once and for all and be paying ~$10/month for all my calls, in and out.

Here I am, sitting in my hotel room. I pay 2.7¢ for all my calls back home, to my parents and locally without having to use the hotel's phone at $1US a pop for a local call.

It's so convienient and saves me tonnes of money

Tarzan that was going to be my question too, depends on the user but some people lose some services.

If you don't need them then fine.

cool, Rascally.

Does it work well on your pocket PC? Do you now have a little map of wifi hotspots in your head?

2.7 cents/minute is a hell of alot cheaper than using a pay phone or your cell.

As for the 911 service issue, I have a few things to say

1) the lawsuit in the US is ridiculous. Vonage totally supports 911, but you have to registered for it. This fact is all over their website.

911 services with voip-type services is kind of conceptually flawed.

Today I'm in new york, tomorrow in Cleveland. I open the laptop and I can call anyone with a click. How does 911 know where I am. I'm sure it will be possible to develop some sort of IP-based phone services 911 service where they could get your location from the ISP you happen to be using and route your call from there

2) The CRTC decision is reactionary and ridiculous. Cell phone companies had over a decade to integrate their services with traditional 911 services. CRTC gives voip providors 90 days.

Basically this is "punishment" to Bell for comming out with their voip services before CRTC made a policy on it, as they are intending to do later in the year.

It's not going to affect Skype-out usage as the company is based in Europe. It makes no difference if people are calling Canada from within or without Canada. CRTC has no way of controling it.

However, I could see this decision affecting Canadian Skype-IN numbers, which is unfortunate. Unless the company is able to separate these services (which they kind of do already). Skype-out, which CRTC can't possibly control, and Skype-IN which is separate and distinct and has nothing whatsoever to do with making phone calls.

I wonder how this will end up playing out.

I want a vancouver skype-in number sad

Well, it's not an either/or situation. You can have both big grin (Skype vs VOIP box) Skype doesn't have any monthly fee, you just pay for the minutes you use to call - and the rates are pretty damned good!

I'd say give it a try first before you ditch your voip providor. You might find yourself using your VOIP box for local calls and receiving calls and skype for calling long distance and when travelling.

Unfortunatley, there are no Canadian Skype-IN numbers available at this time.

You can have three Skype-IN numbers associated to one Skype account.

You could register more accounts to buy more numbers, but you'd need another credit card for that, due to some pretty strict anti-fraud measures that Skype has

seems you might be confused a bit.

skype isn't like a regular voip service.

You don't need a phone number to call normal phones with it, just skype-out credits.

You don't need a # to make calls with it.

I haven't.

I'm guessing it's a 3rd party add-on. Nothing about it on their site.

Skype works awsome for gaming. I found that most users are technically illiterate so trying to get them to use Skype is like pulling teeth. Too bad too cause it's a great free pgm for communicating.
