Here is very funny story about my dad and me....................... we had went fishing, we had our fishing poles sitting next to us on the bank and my dad got a bite and yes he hooked it. My brother was getting it off the line for him{he has been sick for a long time} when my brother let it slip back into the water. rofl. well no sooner than that happened both my polls started juggling, I was reeling both in one at a time and I got the first one in and it was about 4pds and put it on the stringer, then I got the 2nd one in and it weighed about 2pds and dad started complaining that one of them was his fish. He said," you just had to go and catch my fish that your brother let fall back into the pond didn't you?" I just laughed. well when he went to the truck to get his food out I pulled in his line and the 2pd fish on it and then put it back in the water and yelled at him to get back over to his reel cause I was not pulling it in for him!!!!!!! He almost fell getting back to his pole....... lol devil

When I was small, my friends all had their heroes...Luke Skywalker, Mr. T, Superman. My hero was my Dad. My Pop and I would go everywhere together. Hikes in the woods where we would have talks and he would teach me things about nature and music. We would go to the hardware store on Sundays and I would sit on the "hump" in the car. (I guess real people call it the "armrest"wink He taught me how to drive when I was eight. He put me in the driver's seat of his beat up Ford pick-up and chuckled when I nearly leveled our barbed-wire fence. (Although I never touched a steering wheel again until I turned 16) I remember as I was growing up I gave him a tie every single Christmas, yet he always acted surprised and delighted as he opened them year after gruelling year. He was always patient, never judgemental and he rarely got angry with me. He was also never reluctant to show me affection. Growing up I was never starved for hugs. He even built me a "nest" in his great, big recliner every evening. There, I would be squeezed into the small, warm space between my hero and the arm of the chair and we would talk and laugh and play little games until we both fell asleep. And then I grew up and could no longer fit into the nest he made every evening...and the years went by. And more years went by. This past Easter my Dad and I went for a walk up to the creek he taught me how to skip rocks on the water, a skill I have forgotten over the years. He looked at me and said, "It's all about technique and velocity", and I watched his rock skip 8, 9, 10 times. I looked at the head of his thinning grey hair (LoL) and the fine lines around his eyes...and I realized something. Though I am no longer an 8-year-old kid, he is still my hero.

Ok here is one of my best memories of my dad.......It was a super hectic day in the house, everyone was getting ready for the big event. There was about 20 people there. Are you ready yet? he yelled up to me. No dad not yet! After about 20 more minutes of him watching tv, and getting very ansy, he yelled up to me again, I came downstairs, got in the Limo and left. You dont have to do this Kim he said, we can just run to vegas ya know. I know dad I said, but I still love you the most. His eyes filled with tears, I had to look the other way, so my makeup wouldn't run!. We get out of the limo, with flashes from cameras everywhere. next thing I hear...........Who gives this woman to this man.........My father looked at me and said "Woman, when did that happen.....and started to cry again. I do he said and sat down. At the reception, it was time for our dance. My father was so nervous! He twirled me around, and showed me off to all that was there. He said to me, for the first time, Kim, you have become a beautiful woman am I couldn't be prouder than I am right now of you. He was crying so hard that he couldn't even see, he held me so tight that I couldn't breath, and at that point, didn't really want him to let go of me either. I looked around at everyone standing there in the circle around the huge dance floor, and they were crying too, At that moment, I realized, that although I was NEVER daddys little girl, that somehow, I always would be. I never thought he noticed the things/accomplishments that I did in my life to that point. But ya know, he really did. I will never forget that one dance as long as I live and the emotions that filled the room at my wedding.........and he still bring it up every now and again........15 years later. My 9 year old son watches the video now, and always plays that part again and again, for some some reason, and I still cry.

I read the request for father’s day stories and asked my dad a question. I said “Dad, tell me. What was the most memorable fathers day you ever had?” the answer I got was not what I expected. When he started telling me the story I found myself listening intently and hanging on every word. This may or may not be what you are looking for, but I just had to get it out of me and written down. So here is my 2 hrs worth of creative writing and just as a side note, I’ll be having lunch with my dad this father’s day and I am thankful that we can spend the time together that we do.

This is the story he told me.

It was June 1966, in the area of Chu Lai Vietnam. He was assigned to a combat unit and was returning from a 2-day patrol. As he labors up the hill into the rather dismayed cluster of tents and foxholes he was thinking of nothing but the few short days he had left in this hell. At this point he would have never have thought he could be raised out of the exhaustion that was overcoming him. Expecting to collapse in his bunk, he was surprised to see a rather large box in the middle of his cot.

It was from home…

Setting his gear down he sat beside the box and pulled out his knife. Carefully slicing the restraints he opened it and looked in. It was a gold mine of wonderful, no, beautiful objects. There were things that could hardly be imagined in the terrible nightmare going on outside his tent. There was rain gear, and a Zippo lighter, three bottles of hot sauce. Inside there was an entire one of aunt Maggie’s pond cakes that made the whole tent smell like a little bit of home. A few cans of sardines, there was even fresh socks. In this box was a multitude of delicious and useful things that palled in comparison to what he found in the bottom of the box.

There was a small paper envelope slipped off to one side, nearly missed in the frenzy of examining all the things he had received. Picking it up he flipped it over. It read (and I quote) “Huppy Fathers Day” in bright red crayon. In that moment the emotion that swelled in him was rising to the point he trembled as he carefully opened the envelope and removed the dozen or so pictures. His rough and callused hands cradled them like sacred objects. Slowly flipping through them he was spinning into a deep place. His gut was wrenching as he arrived at the last picture. It was a picture of me. Wearing one of his old army jackets that was much

continued:

Wearing one of his old army jackets that was much too large for me. I had a goofy gin on my face and was sitting on the fender of his old car. At this point the rough and tumble Marine that trudged up that hill into camp was gone. All that was left was a sobbing, home sick young man, lying on his bunk and wishing he were any place else. He was in a tent, in the middle of the jungle. In hell.

What wonderful memories you folks are sharing. I'm in tears right now reading them.

I have so many memories of my dad, even little things. Like, when I was a little girl and I'd go to Church with my family...I'd sit on my daddy's lap during sermon, and twirl his thumbs around each other to keep me occupied. How wonderful it was to not have the worries of the world on our shoulders, and how our dads carried that burden for us. I was always very proud of my dad.

You know, when my daughter turned two, I phoned up my parents and did two things.

1. I apologised for all the heartache and worry I caused them, and
2. Thanked them for doing all they did.

I miss my dad alot. He's still around, but we're 3000 miles apart. I'll always be my daddy's little girl smile
