I went to my first East Indian wedding last year. I got myself one of those ready made saris, it had all the folds made on it and clips so it was really easy to wear!

Haha.. I think I made a thread with the exact same title a year and a half ago...

Now I've been to a handful of EI engagements, weddings and receptions. I always wear traditional Indian clothes. I wore a saree to my first function and felt REALLY uncomfortable, they can be really difficult to walk (and dance in) especially if they’re not tied and pinned properly… but you do get used to it. I just wouldn't recommend it for your first time.

I’d personally feel more out of place if I wore regular clothes. Anyone I talk to appreciates it when people of different cultures make the effort to get dressed up for their functions. I've got a few sarees and suits of my own, but I've borrowed from my bf's sister and friends of mine. Last night we went to an engagement party and I wore a bright blue and green embroidered/beaded spaghetti strapped suit. Tonight we've got a reception and I'll wear a bright green saree. I'd suggest you go pick out some fabric and have a suit made for you (for the wedding).. it will be a little cheaper and will be made to fit. And if you have a friend you could borrow off of for the reception, that's the way to go. The outfits get quite expensive the more beadwork and embroidery they have.

A few examples:

This was a really fancy suit I wore to a friends wedding reception, long beaded top and skinny pants, I know you can’t really see it, but you at least get an idea of the jewelry:

This is a saree I wore recently to another friends wedding reception (again sorry, not a very good pic). It was a really pretty dark blue with little sequins all over it like stars:

This is the suit I wore to the Gurdawa in the morning:

Whatever you wear, make sure it’s comfortable… and if you’re going to a temple in the morning, make sure you have a scarf to cover your head with. Other than that, have fun!

Trinity210 - So did u find out whether or not its a Sikh wedding or a Hindu one ?

P.S. u can still wear a suit to the house for the nite before....most ladies there probably will be anyways smile

Unbound - I agree about ppl appreciating it when ppl go out of their way and make an effort to do things out of respect for other cultures.....and i must say u definately looked good in the outfits smile U even went as far as wearing the jewellery and accesories to.......impressive big grin

Everybody looks sooo good in East Indian clothes. Such bright beautiful colors.. and the jewlery in love

trinity210.. everybody dresses up the night before as well. It might be worth it to just have something simple made for you. You can do it up really nice with jewlery.. the set I'm wearing in the second pic cost me under $30 with bangles! (mind you, I got it 50% off because we know the owner of Farrah Bridal)... but bangles are super cheap and a plain set isn't too bad. It's not real silver obviously, but it looks just as good as all the expensive sets.

Indian Weddings are awsome
I went to one in Pushkar, India.

Here's some tips, so you'll fit in.

Eat with your hands, no matter how messy it is, but never use your left.
Budge in line, push and shove if you have to.
Dance, sing scream and celebrate like you've never celebrated before!

The wedding was so fun! heart

My friends helped me get dipped out. Everything was borrowed.

Sikh Temple Ceremony:

Peek-a-boo, bollywood style in a long tunic and mc hammer pants.

Reception:

In a saree...

I went to a place on Main St. and got it wrapped and pinned by a pro. It did not feel uncomfortable at all. I think I paid $6 to get that done.

I've been working at a couple Indian Halls for years now. This includes Muslim and Hindu Wedding ceremonies, Engagement parties, Ladies parties, and Receptions.I've seen many non Indian people wear regular dresses and look great. It's also a nice change (and not all of the Indian woman necessarily wear traditional outfits). I've also seen lots of non-Indian guest look very nice in suits/saris/langas. I think it's whatever you're comfortable in. As long as you look nice. I think people do appreciate if you put the effort to wear their traditional clothes. I've also seen people wear traditional clothes of their own culture (non Indian) as well. I would just advise you to not wear a mini dress.

I think that you should just wear something semi-dressy, that makes you feel great. If one of the Indian family members or people associated to the wedding party suggests you wear Indian clothing, or offers to provide you with a traditional outfit, then you should consider going that way. Otherwise, stick to what you know.

If anyone has a question about what to do or wear attending a cultural wedding, I can help. You do not need to feel like you are stepping in another persona to be a part of the crowd. You try having an outfit custom made and designed in a cultural fusion design that blend Asian with the west. There is a designer specializing in fashion fusion for this purpose. She can be contacted at this email address carlinebangar@yahoo.com.
