This is the quickest way to ruin my planned cardio work out consisting of a long run!!! I have to resort to my bike or stepper or high inclined speed walking.

Anyone know what causes them? (I dont eat before I work out) How to avoid? How to fix it? (I've heard of altering your breathing, but it only works some of the time)

Total pain in the ass cause I just want to keep on truckin on my treadmill smile

Hmmm... I'll maybe try to increase. I usually dance around like a maniac as my warm up... totally gets the muscles loose and the heart going, then I stretch, then run.

?? It's baffling.. sometimes it's all good, sometimes not so good. I just wish I knew how to fix it.

Side stitches are usually the result of improper breathing.

Try slowing down to a walking pace and concentrating on deep breathing for awhile.

I have been a little stuffy due to allergies lately? That might make sense... I do tend to take it down to a walk when it becomes unbearable... then when it subsides, kick it back up but it quickly returns unfortunately.

I try to give-er on the treadmill so I am breathing pretty heavy, maybe just not properly. smile

It's your idiosyntric valve - that's what I had problems with. Its a real pain because I would be so psyched to go for a run and then have this problem, I can suggest going to a registered massage therapist to get it massaged out, just tell them where it hurts exactly when you run and they know how to fix it.

if you develop a 'stitch' in your side, ancient native ways suggest you search for a perfectly round stone and spit under it. basically, it takes your mind off of the pain in your side and bending down helps dissipate the lactic acid build-up. yeah, i saw it in that anthony hopkins/alec baldwin movie with the bear, but it actually works.

I get the same pains.

They are SO FRUSTRATING.

My cardio is good enough now that I can run for 30-45 minutes or so non-stop, but I tend to get these after only 10 minutes or 20 minutes of running and sometimes I can concentrate on my breathing and push them out, but sometimes I can't.

I warm up before I run, I stretch all of my muscles, and I still get them.

I try to concentrate on my breathing right from the start. Sometimes if I breath in through my nose and out through my mouth deeply, for the entire run, I don't get them. It's alright for me because I run outside and no one can hear me, but if you're running beside someone on a treadmill it might be loud.

Let me know if anything works for you, because I hate this problem.

I always have that problem too, it's so frustrating!! I looked it up online and everywhere I read said it was lack of water...

Ladies- I feel your pain!! So frusterating. smile

Ishtar- hmmm... I have been to my reg. massage therapist in awhile, but if I cant find a good solution to this on my own, I think I'm going to have to give that a try. It can be either on my right side, like Twizted's article described, or in the centre of my tummy. A valve problem, that sounds somewhat serious... any other info on that?

Twiztedsista- Thanks for the links!! I'm going to have to give those suggestions a try. I dont know if I'll spit on a round stone lol, but if these suggestions dont work, maybe I'll give that a try too.

Hehe...

I've done that, jabbing at myself where the pain is, which totally helps... but I'm scared I'm going to fly off the side of the treadmill because it keeps me slightly off balance. smile

Good thing I work out at home where no one can see my antics!!

The best way for me to prevent this problem is to stretch.

Lean sideways to the left and the right and hold it for 30 seconds.

I had a dream last night and twizted and gucci were in it.

We were at a party at Cheerbunnie's house and I got mad at mythos and threw a chair which accidentally hit twizted's leg.

She was very gracious about it.

PS. Thanks for those links. I just had time to read the first one and I am going to try abdominal breathing. It also looks like I'm going to have to do more sit-ups!

Intricate_Design: it's not serious at all. Happens all the time. But it hurts like a SOB.

hehe.
People running on treadmills is like watching hamsters on wheels.

I miss running alongside the river and mountains in the bush.

When u get the side cramps, nuffin u can do but keep on truckin,
so go power walk, then let it cool down a bit but keep the muscles gwoin, then jog a bit more.

usually going for 15min power walk, 15 min jogs, to 30 mins runs, 5 min cool down does the trick.

then again. u jus gotta dial in to your body and what it can and can't take
takes awhile
