My girlfriend and I would like to join a club somewhere local. Obviously beginner friendly, and offers classes at night, start of the week preferred.

Anyone belong to a good club or know of one?

There's so many out there, it's hard to know where to begin. smile I'm not set on women only or co-ed, and as far as style goes... I'm fairly open, but likely something more traditional as opposed to kick boxing.

Any help or suggestions would be great!

In White Rock, I know 2 that have fairly good reputations...

Combat Athletics on King George Hwy and ~ 11 Ave...in the Big Pink Hotel

Dragon Den on 24 ave and about 155 street

Also, if you are looking for a private instructor, or semi-private, I know an AWESOME trainer.

smile Thanks girl!

It's actually going to be a birthday present for my girlfriend, so ideally I'd like co-ed so she can oggle the men too. he he I'm definately going to call those places this week though... even a women only class would still rock.

Intricate_Design, is there a specific style of martial art you're looking into?

What exactly would your goals be? If you want to oggle the hotties, a kick-boxing gym would probably be your best bet. If you want to learn a style that has lots of kicking, try Tae-Kwon-Do. If you're into lots of flashy stuff look into Kung-Fu. If you're looking for a well-rounded fighting style, check out Karate. I study karate, so if you're interested in it I can recommend a few places in the area. Hope that helps you a bit...

Patty-

I did a form of Karate when I was younger, and really enjoyed it. The oggling of men is just a fringe benefit for her. smile We plan to take it seriously, but only study one day a week if possible and some extra practise of what I learn in class with my workout or something by myself.

I ideally want something relaxing for the mind, and hard on the body as far as challenge and cardio, but not extreme to begin with obviously.

That would be great if you could recommend some places!

there's a dojo at thrift and johnson that teaches the multi-disciplinary style of Tong Moo Do. i can't speak to it's attributes, just that it is there. i saw the flyer the other day. it's between the Liquor store and Buy-Low.

i practised Kempo style karate when i was younger but i cannot find any decent teachers now.

BigBob- Thanks... I knew of that one, but not sure if it's open as late as I'd like, but I'll have to check it out. smile

Sundeep- err, thanks... but it's more something for her and I to do together. I'll pass the message along though. lol

I go to the Richmond Tong Moo Do and I absolutely love it!!! The school has a diverse, effective and fun curriculum and everyone is so nice. I've been there for 6 years now. Martial Arts has really changed my life. I know that sounds cliche, but it really has.

You can try out a month at Richmond or White Rock for $19.99 and they'll give you a free uniform (so you save $40 right there). If you like it, cool and if not, then there's no catches. There is a one year program you can sign up for, but that's standard at any school now. Another bonus is there is no testing fees at the school. You just pay for your new belt (a mere $8). I used to pay $60 a pop at my old martial arts school, and if you fail, you have to pay again.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me and I'll tell you more about it.
