I think elusivefishy needs to stop preaching her beliefs on other people and let others make their own choices.
I on the other hand am PAAAAAAAALE, I haven't tanned in years, might do it this year though.

What's the difference between lay down and stand up besides the amount of time you spend. I read that it takes longer for you to tan in lie down v. the stand up. Are the better beds out there or some that use a particular UV? My girls say there is a difference, but what is it?

Lie down can cause uneven patches on your back, and because it is easier for sweat to build up it can actually cause tinea versicolor (which is what I am trying to get rid off). That is why I have never even tried it.

you should look more into the beds and heat they are using and all that more then the pricing shouldnt you?
exactly!
i used to go to fabutan for 24.99/month for unlimited, but their beds suck SHXT! i was having to go the max mins (i think 25) more than 3 times a week just to maintain! i got so fed up with putting sooo much exposure on my skin that i didnt even go for the last month of my contract.
i have been to a few others...(fitness world is nasty IMO) but now i go to sun center by lougheed. i find i only go through about 50ish bucks every 2 months (not including lotions) they have it set up in the points system, so i usually get 49.99 for 400 points plus sometimes coimes with a lotion if they are having a promotion. the points can be used for any of the beds, the more intense the bed, the more points per minute. at least this way you get variety, and the one that i usually use is 2 points per min and i only have to go in like 12-15 mins to get really decent colour...about 1-2 a week.
but now im moving close to patterson/metrotown. anyone know any good places around there?

They have already been mentioned in this thread:
-Psoriasis
-Eczema
-Tinea Versicolor
Some people go for SAD but I have heard SAD is mainly just a problem in places that don't get much daylight in the winter (like up north). Apparently just being outside in daylight should be enough. Some people still swear by tanning though. I don't know if there is something to that or if it is psychosematic.

I don't think it's necessary to "tan" for those reasons. I used to have eczema quite badly, and my dermatologist actually presrcibed sun ray treatment which is basically like being exposed to the sun but it does not contain UV rays. They are special lamps which are actually used at medical facilities, they are not tanning beds. You do not tan underneath them and it does not harm the skin. I had to go twice a week as a kid and I hated it.
I'm not trying to dis tanning because I have also gone and I still might go a few times in my life, I'm just saying the reason to tan "for medical reasons" is a bit wishy-washy as I'm not even sure that tanning beds treat these afflictions since they are not the same kind of lamps. And if it does, you can get the same treatment from the special lamps, and you don't have to resort to a tanning bed.

^ Sun is also linked to skin cancer though. So moderation does make a difference, if you go once a week, you are much much less likely to develop skin cancer than if you go 4 times a week. Also, loads of people spend time in the sun without SPF protection ALL THE TIME so you're just as likely to develop those symptoms from being outside.

I tan to feel good, I like the heat. I go in for 10 minutes on the lie down beds. For me it's a once in a while thing, I doubt I'll do this for more than a few months. I don't mind being casper white.
Tanning makes you look for toned too.

Well, most people I know do not even use sunscreen on a daily basis unless they are going to the beach all day. UV radiation in general is bad, I think we can all agree on that.
NAC, you should ask your dermatologist about it, it's not exactly a very unknown treatment, as I even had it as a child and that was in 1988. It's even becoming more popular because of people battling with SAD. You should def look into it as an alternative to tanning, and the other things is, the cost might be covered by your insurance if it's for a documented medical reason!

my eczema has come on later in life. i'd like to try that sun ray treatment that Karmattack mentioned. sounds much better than using those tanning beds.

^ How odd. Usually onset of cronic eczema is either in childhood, and often disappears before puberty, or at puberty, and lasts a life time. Are you sure it isn't a sensitivity to something like the detergent or soap?

Eczema can also come back during hormone changes. Kids often have it and lose it during the major hormone change in puberty (which was also my case so I am very lucky), but there's also adult eczema. Hormones can bring it back, it's really annoying because it might come back when I'm going thru menopause. I hope not! *knock wood*

^ My mom and sister had the same case as yours. My grandmother used to bandage my moms legs to keep her from scratching. Little did people realize bach then that bandaging just makes it worse.
They thought I was the lucky one that was spared until grade 7 hit.

Vancouver has **** all sun exposure compared to if you lived in Arizona or Cali...... so I dont think alittle fake n bake is bad, probably actually does us good, being pasty white isnt healthy...... humans were ment to walk around naked in the sun for hours on end.... its our eveolution now that we wear clothing and spend days inside dark buildings and enviroments that we dont recive proper sun exposure.
take that nasty pasty goth girls...
