Wow, 3 years. That is indeed a while.

I caved in and took the road trip for his show in Seatown last year. Prices weren't bad, at US$25 per ticket.. but I guess the $ for gas made up for it.

I think you're better off holding onto your memories of Sasha from years past.

His mixing is non-existant now since it's all done automatically and instead of expanding his imagination. this whole Maven/Ableton thing has turned him into a lazy dude who presses some buttons. All his sets the past year have been uninspiring at best, repetitive at its worst.

My profile pic is of Sasha so I'm coming from a position of adoration. He was the best at what he did when he was on. He doesn't care that much anymore.

So what you are telling me is that he is turning into a lazy Zabiela now?

I am a Sasha nerd. I have seen him play countless times dating back to 1996. Yes, he has changed. Yes, the magic that he used to create when he put on that first record is somehwat gone. Yes, he is getting on. Times change, people change.

That said however, I still think there is a quality or mystique about him that has yet to be pissed away. Watching him on the boat party in Miami gave me glimpses of that.

But yes, I long for the days where he would step up to the controls after JVM or John and completely floor the place. Those, were the days wink

Ah Domnahl,

We've been discussing this topic for a number of years now (the demise of The Man Like). I think I've just found that the hype for the Maven/Ableton thing greatly outweighs the substance it brings. He's not quite Live PA and not truly a live mixing DJ anymore. Instead, it seems like a hybrid of the lazy elements of both.

I heard reports from the boat party in WMC that Desyn rocked it in comparison to Sasha or JD.

Even though it was protooled slightly, remember that both NE1 and NE2 were mixed on 2 turntables. The imagination and process to pull that off still astounds me. Why Sasha was Sasha was in those sets, along with the JJJ Mixup NE tour 97 or that Zen Afterparty set. The last great set I heard him play was in San Fran at a boat party when he was touring with James Zabiela a while back.

In the end, what it is is that Sasha can still do it, he just doesn't bother to and that's the saddest of all. Who still brings that magic now though is up to debate.

wrong, NE1 was done 100% in protools.. I'm assuming the same for NE2. There's lots of trickery in those mixes that could not have been done live.

I'll re-check my liner notes but I remember looking at NE1 and 2 and it says it was mixed on 2 turntables.

I have seen and heard Sasah play the NE2 set live ten years ago and it sounded BETTER that the cd and there were 20 other people in the room to witness it as well. So even with the "trickery" done with the protools on the cd, that live set was amazing.

Kevin, I couldn't imagine how good that set would be!! There's definetly more energy in a live mix. One of the reasons I dislike the Fundacion cd is because it's way too smooth and layered... It lacks any feeling..

Music was different back then though.. what was considered a banging track then is a not so much a harder edged tune now. Plus the atmosphere of wanting bigger and badder was not as prevalent in say 97 as it is now. Time, place, context are all important to a set. Why I always listen to NE1 and NE2 is that it takes me back to the better place and fond memories. It's joy, pure joy.

Ableton or not, that 6 or 7 hour set he played in that tiny garage in Burnaby in 1997 (correct me if I'm wrong on the date) remains one of the best sets I've ever seen & heard.
And Sasha was pounding back beer after beer during it.
