WASHINGTON - The Earth is the hottest it has been in at least 400 years, probably even longer. The National Academy of Sciences, reaching that conclusion in a broad review of scientific work requested by Congress, reported Thursday that the "recent warmth is unprecedented for at least the last 400 years and potentially the last several millennia."

Thoughts? The National Academy of Sciences isn't exactly a wing-nut liberal group....

Its 63 in Seattle right now with a projected high of 70 which is average for June. The weather in one particular area of the world is really irrelevant to overall global temperature...

People forget simple concepts like planet cores do get warmer as they age. As well as the sun getting bigger each and every day.

do you really presume to think the race that youre a part of (human) could POSSIBLY change this planet's base temp, even if it tried?! thats a bit egocentric, wouldnt you say? humans have tried their best to tame their environment over the eons, to no avail. witness floods that break dikes (which are intended to hold waters at bay), the utter abortion that a city becomes with just an inch of snow (maybe we could build a dome?), and rich peoples' houses that fall off cliffs due to the inexorable progress of erosion.

of course there is a chance that we have a small affect on global climate, but wouldnt you say a far more logical conclusion would be the age-old climatic cycles that the earth has ALWAYS endured?

the worst movie of all time was this one made for TV that attempted to foist the idea that with a certain series of events the earth could be plunged into an ice age within a couple years or less. do these people think im a tard? i meet enough of those at the poker tables.

go hug a tree.

damn - no greenies on this forum I guess ... I've got no theories as to the cause of the warming, but actually the planet is even colder than it otherwise would be because of global dimming - and that's proven to be human's doing. So, it is certainly possible for humans to change temperatures on a global scale. Check it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_dimming

Proven to be humans doing huh... proven how?

I see lots of "it's thought that" in the link you provided. Like "It is currently thought that the effect of global dimming is probably due to the increased presence of aerosol particles in the atmosphere."

Not really proven there. Also scientists report varying results - none of which are consistent anywhere. They then go on to say the "dimming" effect has decreased since 1990.

Global Dimming, Global Warming. It seems that people always have to have a cause to argue about. Some treat it like a religion. Most seem to agree that the earth may be warming. However it makes for great fun to debate what the cause might be. Especially if you don't like driving behind giant SUV's.

ill tell you what pisses me off IN THE REAL WORLD. we supposedly live in this liberal state (state of WASHINGTON, usa), and during my walks of my dog (to get beer lol) i pick up recyclables on the side of the road. i am a fervent proponent of the "tread lightly" theory of human existence. i dont like to gratuatously waste, i MUST recycle everything that i can (even if it means a small hassle for me), etc. it doesnt appear that the SO CALLED "liberal majority" in my area share similar opinions, as on my walk (same route every time) i can CONSISTENTLY pick up 5-10 recyclables (plastic bottles/aluminum cans) every time.

there isnt much that is accomplished by talking about these issues. what a person CAN do is live their life in as environmentally friendly a way as they can. that means when camping they PICK UP THEIR BUTTS!!! they recycle. they dont waste. spewing out cynical "facts" about our race does nothing.

Very much agree with you there K. It always irritates the hell out of me to see people leaving a mess behind. To be completely honest though, it irritates me because it looks bad. Rarely to people really take care of what they have, or show consideration for community property - thinking it's not their responsibility.

However I also generally get annoyed with labels. Label's tend to catagorize people into a set mode of thinking, and doesn't really encourage one to have an open mind. I'd expect anyone to clean up after themself, regardless of their political outlook.

well, after correcting my two spelling mistakes in the prior posts, pointed out by rach...

dashy, ya the label "liberal" i use only because i would expect people with this sort of outlook to be MORE concerned with "green" issues on the average. i dont know, maybe if i lived in texas i would find 20 recyclables per trip!!

not really. we have the ability to destroy acres and acres of the rainforest every day. that's not egocentric, it's a fact. we have the ability to blow up mountains and melt an entire population with a simple bomb drop. why does it seem unfathomable that we can increase the surface temperature by 0.005 degrees per annum?

humans have tried their best to tame their environment over the eons, to no avail.

I guess you've never been to vegas...

witness floods that break dikes (which are intended to hold waters at bay),

witness the hoover dam...

the utter abortion that a city becomes with just an inch of snow (maybe we could build a dome?),

i've golfed inside a dome in wininpeg manitoba. it was toasty in the middle of winter. good thinking. but it's been done.

London Kev

I gotta respectfully disagree...first time I have disagreed with you ever on 2 years here...but we are about to have our first quarrel....LOL.

Please....dont give me that Fraser Institute lets build more carstheresnosuchthingasgreenhousegas line....

Any student of a basic university physics course knows that humans influenced it.

Now, I see where yer going brother...I used to teach a basic biology/climatology unit at Ryerson, and yes, there are warming cycles. But the scientific evidence supporting human influence here is overwhelming. Only the staunchest supporters of the Petro Can lobby and Haliburton Oil Co. argue with this fact. The told us in 1979 at Trent University in Environmental Studies 101 this would happen and dang if they werent right.

Yet the dumbest kid in biology class knows the concept of trees absorbing CO².

Maybe a mildly informed adult would know CO² does have a heat-insulating effect when tested inside a lab glass sphere.

But only a bank-hugging, money-licking individual would not know deforestation of the US and Europe is now at 80%, the Amazons are in the process of getting destroyed, and plankton (the water forest) is dying due to raw sewage being pumped into the oceans.

Hey ahole, you don't have to be a tree hugger to be concerned about global climate change. Considering even the Pentagon is funding studies about the future of climate change and the cause/effect relationship it will have in the future, I would say that everyone left of a Neo-Con is considering the whether or not it is a valid concern. Apparently your mind is already closed, and that is too bad.

I absolutely believe that human kind can change the base planet temp. SEE : nuclear winter, nuclear summer, Kuwait oil well fires, etc. Man has completely altered environments to make it suitable to live in.

it is my firm belief that the global warming scare was something put out to help the europeans overcome the 'green' objection to increasing nuclear power capability.....

just thought i would throw that out there....

i even noticed president bush saying something similar recently. perhaps tony blair let him in on the european strategy.

you have to admit.....any decrease in O-2 emission means less reliance on arab oil......they really do have us over the barrel at the moment...and they know it.

We have altered small ecosystems. This is talking about a global scale... and you whip out nuclear winter and summer as if its happened. They are both hypothetical.

There are lots of loose hypothesis and theories about human influence on the warming of the planet as a whole, but there is still NO definitive proof of it.

Now before you have people like Sketchy jump down my throat, I do believe that humans have had an impact and will continue to do so, but it is still not proven.
