i'm moving back to kits september 1st and am in dire need of a gym, so was wondering if anyone has any recommendations? based on equipment, business, classes, staff, space, comfort level, cost/contracts, etc etc?

thank you smile

I won't call it a recc, but here's the basic rundown on Ron Zalkos (1st and Burrard):
- smaller than average space
- good crowd, not too many meatheads, not too many meat marketers
- can get good deal
- club hours not great but servicable
- plan your exit strategy, Ron *will* hold you to 30 day notice
- very very close to Kits beach
- little / no Nautilus crap

I go to the KITS Fitness World and I like it. I usually workout in the Women's only area lol

I have also heard great things about Ron Zalkos as well.

^ Thanks for reminding me. RZ has, at last look, a women's only area as well. Of course, there's the women's only club in the Chemetics building next door too... wink

does RZ have a crazy contract like fitness world?

i work out at fitness world. I like the hours--24 hours during the week, means that when I'm up at 2 am after writing a paper and i need to run, i can do it.

Occassionally it is very busy, but for the most part, i can always find weights/cardio equipment to use.

I don't like the women's only section- they play 'girl tv' instead of sports, and i find that trying to pay attention to dawson's creek or the view is very different from running while watching football or hockey.

Also, the women in the women's only section are often kind of bitchy-- they all look each other up and down, and size each other up. It's STRAAAANGE.

Other than that, i think it's a good gym, and better than the bird coop (meat market!)

^^Define "crazy".

It's been a ton of time since I signed on, but my contract (through my job) worked out to $21.40/month tax and all, year minimum, month-to-month after that, 30 day notice on cancellation. I think a "normal" rate is closer to $30.

If you want, I can get a trial pass for you to check the place out (or you can print the web pass from their site). Ron and staff are usually pretty good about such things with the regulars.

there is also a just ladies fitness up the street from ron zalko ,i believe they let you pay monthly no contract but it's pricey ,good luck talking to anyone there though, i have left two messages there, so far no response

^ That's the one in the Chemetics building (the building is on Cornwall, the gym is in the rear, so it's just across the alley from the building where RZ is).

-ashwee-, if i join fitness world will you workout with me? blush

i think what i'll do is get a free pass (most of seem to offer trials for each of the ones in that neighbourhood) and see which one i like most.

^ Lithe, i will totally work out with you!

i need to return to my "carido queen" behaviour. And my weight training too! If you end up signing up for fitness world, we should be work out buddies big grin

Ive worked out at Kits, Zalkos, and Fitness World and chose to go across the bridge to Pantheon...

It's quite disappointing how horrible the Fitness clubs are in the Kits area...

If I had to stay on the Kit's side for some reason, I would either chose Kits COmmunity Centre or begrudgingly, fitness world...

Truthfully, being at fitness world at 6 oclock at night is not always the best. But, for females who don't need 200 pound weights to lift for bicep curls, it is fine. There is a lot of equipment, plus, if you're stuck somewhere like richmond, or coquitlam, you can always go to the fitness world out there. It just gives you a little bit of freedom.

And like i said before- i really liked being able to go work out no matter what time of day it was. During exams i definitely took advantage of the fact that i could go on the eliptical or treadmil at 12 am....2 am.....6am.....etc.

Not to mention that studying while on the eliptical kept my brain and body moving, rather than falling asleep.

Also-- Lithe i think you are still at ubc, right? Although the campus gyms are convinent, they are the worst forms of meat markets. Every time i went into the bird coop, i felt like if i wasn't in full lululemon and make up, hair done etc, then i was inferior.
Fitness world has its moments like that too- but there are enough people in there in shorts and teeshirts that it doesn't matter. smile

If the UBC area is included in your search, there is a new Gold"s Gym up there that is pretty nice...

i've gradded. i had a pass for the bird coop for one season, and used it twice... definately too high pressure for me. there'd even be guys lined up doing 'bicep curls' watching the girls do aerobics (and vice versa) yikes.

the only reason i'd choose kits workout over fitness world is because it offers more classes and all the classes are free.. i'll have to weigh my options though.

^ ME TOO! I literally bought this huge pass so that i could work out monday/wed/fri days and tues/thurs mornings, and went twice.
I guess some people like the motivation of the constant evalutation of other people. blank stare

That's true -- kits workout has more classes and they are all included. I have only gone to a few classes at fitness world- i prefer to do my own cardio. And the classes like cardio kick boxing are free and readily available- which would be my primary interest i think.

At one time Kits had great equipment, new, shiney, quality stuff...then when a gym down the street shut down they got rid of the new stuff and got the used stuff, without altering their prices...decisions like that, as a customer frustrate me...

Out of all the fitness worlds my favorite is the kits one for sure... Good equipment, lots of cardio machines, good ladies section... 6pm at any gym sucks..

I own a private gym on Broadway, www.kinesiologists.ca, and we would be happy to take a few in. We run as a high end personal training facility and restrict it to 8 people per hour. info@kinesiologists.ca
