3 March 2009: The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator for Gaza called yesterday for the opening of all crossings into the territory and increases in both the quantities and types of commodities allowed said in a field update.

Among the items critically needed are spare parts and fuel for the power plant, supplies for hospitals and water and sewage treatment facilities. A constant influx of cash is also needed to reactivate the private sector and prevent increasing dependence on aid.

Other supplies needed include:
• agricultural materials (farming families make up some 27 per cent of the Gaza population)
• construction materials, including cement, iron bars and pipes, for water supply and road rehabilitation

Other UN organizations are also expressing concern about the pressing need for reconstruction activities. According to a report from United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) a total of 2,350 family homes need to be rebuilt, 500 homes need major repair; and 10,000 need minor repair. UNICEF, the United Nations’ Children’s Fund, remains concerned that the nutritional status and general health of children in Gaza is likely to deteriorate, given the dependency of Gazan families on food aid and cash assistance, as well as the lack of access to clean tap water.
