The Mirage. It's older, but it still has style without all the cheesy gimickry of some of the newer places and it won't cost you an arm and a leg. The location is mint. The pool is one of the best. Restaurant selection at the hotel is great. It's got a huge sportsbook.

Depends on price range, time of year.
A reasonably priced hotel with an amazing pool is the Flamingo. Pool is like over fifteen acres. Plus, the hotel is located dead centre of the strip.
If you want a more classy hotel, with a center strip location, go with Ceasars. Will cost you more, but you will get a nicer room.

Flamingo!!!
It's cheap and clean and right in the middle of the strip - with one of the best pools in Vegas (Mirage and Hard Rock having the best pools of course).
Flamingo, Caesar's Palace, Bally's and Paris will actually price match and beat any price by 25% so you can usually get an insanely HAWTT deal. I usually price match with www.priceline.com. The total price just has to be cheaper than what's on their own website.
Flights are also cheaper if you fly out of Bellingham.

Excalibur is good if you have a limited budget.
There are better hotels on a limited budget. The Excalibur is the sh!tiest hotel on the strip! Dont stay there.

what's the Stratosphere like?

There are much worse places than the Excalibur. Imperial Palace, Circus Circus, the Stratosphere, etc. At least the Excalibur is near some decent places. Ditto for the IP, but it's a total dive.

Stratosphere at the very far end of the strip, near "old vegas".
I have seen the Imperial Palace from the outside, that place looks pretty ghetto.

Go stay at the places shmoove just mentioned, and get back to us.
Excalibur is nice, affordable, and is part of the craziness that is the south strip.

Excalibur is pretty ghetto as well. If that is the price range, Flamingo wins hands down.

Flamingo looks good so far.
what would you reccomend to see if you're only staying 2 nights?

Um, Flamingo > Excalibur when it comes to price range.
You can stay at Excalibur for $50 a night if you go at certain times, whereas the cheapest I've ever seen the Flamingo was about $100 a night.

Recommendations for two days?
There is so much in Vegas to see and do.
For shopping, hit up the Las Vegas Premium Outlet malls. You will need to take a cab. Pretty cheap ride. Also can go to the Fashion Show Mall on the strip.
W\hen you land in Vegas, make sure you tell the cabby not to take the tunnel to the hotel. Much more expensive.

Or just find a shuttle. They serve all the major hotels and costs something like $6.

If you go with Flamingo, make sure to ask for a room facing the Bellagio. Great view, and you can see the water show from your room that happens there.

Shuttles stop alot. Cab ride between two people comes in around ten dollars total. Shuttles stop everywhere. I went to UNLV for one year, so I learned pretty quick the tricks the cabbies pull.

Other things to see and do:
Go to the big hotels and wander around.
They have lions at the MGM grand every day.
Not sure if you are partying, but the best clubs right now are Tao, Pure, Jet, and Tryst.
