...His actions are probably less about his community ties and more about his individual characteristics. As for people not taking enough notice of the situation as it was unfolding, this could certainly be a consequence of "culture." It is well documented that North Americans in general, as compared to Asian cultures for example, are individualistic and self-focused rather than "community-centric" and tight with family.

Spousal abuse happens in every religion, race, and culture.

There is no way that you will find out why it happens differently in different cultures on a clubbing website. That would require research and studies.

How is it a "Cultural thing" to kill your wife?

are you asking me? If you've read anything I've written, it should be very clear that I've not made any such statement. It is obviously NOT a cultural thing to kill someone or to rape someone or to steal something or to damage property....but there ARE different reasons from culture to culture that influence those behaviors...

no it wasn't directed towards you.....but being an indo canadian female, i do know that the women in the family carry the honor-not the men.....if women in their family status "messes" up, that's it...we've ruined the family and face....thus many action are taken in murdering them....

Sbee, I do agree that there may be "cultural" reasons for fights occuring between husbands and wifes of different races for different reasons. No doubt about that.

However, the bottom line is there are dumb men who don't know how to deal with those arguments and differences in all races, and kill their wife. Something is messed up in their heads.

sposual abuse is not a cultural thing, however when there is a lack of or absence of adherence to certain cultural values/traditional practices, informal rules/precedence, the unwritten codes, and so forth, men in the indo-canadian community and of course others use violence and intimidation with their spouses as a means of getting them to adhere to such values. No culture/religion prescribes or encourages one to beat/kill thier wives. Theres a lot of guys who deal with there marriage problems via alcoholism, drug abuse, others take more proactive measures, counselling, or just simply call it quits. Sposual abuse is a method by certain people of all cultures to deal with discrepancies and disagreements in thier marriage. Please lets not jump on the "those hindus beat down their wives" bandwagon.

^ Very true.

Also, in my opinion, I believe the media tends to glorify ethnic murders. The media exoticizes these killings by bringing the cultural background of these people to the forefront.

And many of the people who are involved in (especially East Indian and Muslim) murders use the culture card to their advantage. You kill someone, and you justify your actions by hiding behind the curtains of your religion or culture. Ie., a lot of these so called "honor killings" IMO are just a way of masking something that is indiscriminately wrong.

And for example, the most recent murder of Wairach (sp?) by her husband was a result from long standing spousal abuse. But add in the cultural mix, and all of a sudden, it becomes less about spousal abuse, and more about the strange beliefs of some foriegn, backwards culture.

The media exoticizes theses killing by placing a higher value on the cultural/religious/ethnic backgrounds of these individuals and a lesser value on the actual problem. And instead of taking a stand against this extremely biased way of addressing the situation, a lof of East Indians try to use this to their advantage to justify their unjustifiable actions. Thus, making the rest of the community look like complete barbarians. Although some of us very much are.

My two and a half cents.

thugpungun: I'm not blaming the media. I'm simply stating that IMO, the media's coverage of these stories is very construed. I'm not denying a problem exists because it most definitely does.

And as discussed several million times before, the issue of domestic abuse exists in all cultures, in all walks of life. It does not neccessarily occur more in the Indian community, but it is however more tolerated and accepted, and the reperccusions of seeking help outside the family are much more severe because of the close-knittedness of the Indian community.
