I have been working out for a while now, and am pretty happy with my progress.

There seems to be a lot of information out there regarding cutting and bulking.

My question is, is it really required?

I lift weights three times a week, eat right, and play soccer at pretty good level three times a week as well.

They say it is not possible, or very hard to gain muscles, and cut fat.

From what I gather, cutting and bulking seems more geared for big body builders.

Thus, my question, is eating well, working out, and playing alot of soccer going to hinder me if I want to add more muscle? I cannot cut out the soccer, but from the sounds of it, to gain size, I need too?

Whatever happened to working out hard, eating right, and doing cardio?

Thanks in advance.

if you want to add mass then id suggest cutting back on the cardio and lifting heavy.

eating well, working out and playing a lot of soccer will keep you lean and you will still make good gains depending on your diet and rest, just not as much size.

if your playing sports a lot you dont want to bulk up anyways unless its offseason.

when your bulking you will slow your metabolism down which is probably pretty fast from keeping active and healthy as it is right now.

when you start cutting you'll have to kick start your metabolism again so your body can go into fat burning mode again.

Thanks Jug!

See, that is the problem. I cannot cut out soccer, yet I still want to add some size.

By size I don't mean huge, just some very good definition, while maintaining low body fat.

By the sounds of it, I can still make some gains, even with the amount of cardio I am doing, is that correct?

You can Cut during soccer season and add mass in the off season.

of course man, its actually a healthy way to go about it.

cardio, weights, a good diet and rest will help you gain lean size which may take longer to physically see compared to bulking and cutting but thats probably the way to go for you.

you should pick up a scale that calculates body fat, it won't be 100% accurate but will give you an idea on your progress and how much fat your dropping and how much muscle your adding to replace it in your weight.

Okay,

Thanks guys, I guess will go with bulking once soccer is finished.

Too bad you can't have it both ways. sad

P.S

Where do you pick up those "fat scales"?

A steady diet of meth should give you all the cutting you need.

yee like uhmkay said... cut when your playin ball... keep your calories low try resting up in the steam room or suana after a work out... burns alot of calories.. uhh and if u wana bulk up do it during the off season try n eat more than 4 meals aday.. including protien.. lift heavier weights.. lower reps.. also if you wanna gain size do your reps fast not slow and properly

my 2 cents.

well, soccer shouldn't affect your efforts to gain much... with the exception of legs. Legs much like all the other parts of your body need to rest to recover. If you are playing a lot of soccer well that could and DOES slow down the recovery phase. I also find that I cannot do nearly as much weight on my leg days if I had played soccer in the 2 days prior.

The rest of your body should be just fine though. I don't know what you do in terms of sets but keep your sets in the 6 to 8 rep range and try to do 3-4 exercise fo each muscle group when you are working that muscle group. Yea it can take a fair bit of time.

You may want to eat more to compensate for soccer, but honestly you'd be surprised how little you burn in terms of calories when playing soccer (well, most sports for that matter).

In general you need to be eating a lot if you are trying to gain muscle.

See you at our next game budd.
