What will you be using it for? You only need high megapixels if you print your photos...

This vague thread is worthless if you don't specify:
1) Your budget?
2) In regular basis, what will you be using it for?
3) What features are important to you?

I knew I should have pm'ed you about this.
Budget, dont really have one..nothing too crazy, cause I like to change them often.
Ill be using it almost everyday, I take lots of pictures, I want something that works well in the dark also.
Some cameras suck when using them in places with little to no lighting.
I dont want something too big, something small and stylish.

I just got a Canon Powershot SD700IS ... I loooooove it.
Extremely user friendly, takes great pictures and vids for the money. Was just over $500 bucks from futureshop. I also got a 2gig sd card... I have yet to drain the battery on it, lasts forever!

I'm Canon biased.
In my brand rating and depending on the photo enthusiast.
#1 : Canon or Nikon
#2 : Sony
For your usage, I suggest:
Canon PowerShot SD800 IS = $449.99 (that's the lowest I can find. If are you ABSOLUTELY SERIOUS on buying this camera. I can direct you to a store to pricematch. Otherwise, please don't waste anybody's time). It's a decent camera and you won't regret it.

for dark pictures, the Fujifilm F-Series is pretty decent, but nice (F10, F20 or F30)
Shouldn't run your more than 300 at FS, but if you look around, you can probably snag it for 250, even.

Bare in mind, not necessarily "good optics" (ie. Carl Zeiss) with "small" lens produce a better image.

My first couple of cameras were Sony using Carl Zeiss. No problems and produced "good" images.
Don't get me wrong about Carl Zeiss. I have used quotation marks as per my previous post.
Light + Glass = Crisp/Sharp Image.
Don't have high expectations when the lens is small (hence, most compact point and shoot cameras)
EDIT: On the other hand, the bigger the lens, the higher probability of geometric distortion. Unless, you are willing to invest in thousands of dollars.
On the flip side, the smaller the lens, the less probability of geometric distortion. But other issues come to play. HA! One can't have the entire cake.

Kindly read me subjectively and not objectively.
There's nothing wrong with owning a Point-n-Shoot, ProSumer (SLR-like) and SLR cameras.
My posts were never intended to belittle one's photography ability. Everyone starts out somewhere and this includes me. I have had all levels of cameras and currently have a "compact" and my existing.
Cheers.
