As far as I know, which name you use has more to do with where you grew up, or dialectical differences pertaining to socio-economic considerations.
Basically, blacks and hobos use "Brown Julius", "Cleveland Steamer" is more a middle class nomenclature and "Hot Carl" is a little more aristocratic, if not homosexual.
