So I mailed off for my passport, and will be leaving for Florida on June 20th. When I mailed off the passport application it was supposed to be a wait of up to six weeks. NOW when I call the passport office number or look on the website, it is saying 10 weeks!! I would never have sent my passport stuff in the mail if that was the case. Now I am scared I will not get my passport in time!!! Is there any suggestions on what I could do to make sure I get it? Please don't tell me i'm ****ed. sad

cry

I think if there's a matter of urgency then they can speed up the process. If it is too late then drive across the border and fly from Seatown.

I'm sure you'll have it in time. There's still 5 more weeks between now and your departure.

In general if you included your flight itinerary they will expedite in order to make sure you receive it in time. That is what they did for me, but I waited in line and didn't mail in.

Apparently, I heard that when you go to the passport office they give you a number that has a time on it, so that there are no long line ups anymore, I don't know if i believe that, but it sure sounds better than waiting 9 hours in a line up!

That would be ideal.

Yeah, I heard this too, someone was talking about it at my work.

When you fill out your application it asks for the date you will be travelling and i think they do take that into consideration. Plus if they say 10 weeks its never REALLY 10 weeks they just want you to get it in as early as possible jsut in case...its all good. wink

LadyHeather, why in hell would you mail your application on May 11 when you are travelling in 5 weeks?? And why would you post a question on a internet site when you should be calling the passport office?

Stupid!!

Krissy, it does take 10 weeks now for some. Do you realize there are about a thousand passport applications every day??

People, do your application online!! Once you get into the office, you will only wait about 15 minutes to get served. And for an additional $10, you will have your passport in 14 days.

blank stare

apparently homeless people are waiting in line starting at about 3am each morning outside the downtown office building and selling people their spots in line.

That's crazy that they're lining up outside now and as early as that.

Spelling_Expert - you don't need to be a jerk! I did not send my application on May 11th actually, I sent it the beginning of May... and because I have been in the middle of moving so I didnt have all the things I needed to send off for my passport till it was unpacked...
And I posted this question because I was worried and have you tried calling the passport office?! Good luck getting through. Also, I work during the day so by the time I am off work the offices are closed.

But now I am really relieved because I contacted my local MP's office and she suggested I apply for a new birth certificate which only takes up to 7 days to mail over. And apparently the lineups at the passport office arent so long anymore, so I will be able to get a passport afterall! tongue

yay smile

WTF? my passport took me 24 hours to get? Why am I seeing people saying 10 weeks? I have to come back to Canada to renew it this summer, I was expecting the 24 hour service again. WTF changed.

^ I think you can get an express passport if you go into the office, you have to pay extra though smile

what changed was the US requiring passports to fly from Canada to the US, hence a huge run on people applying.

I just applied for my daughter's passport last week (we're traveling July 10) and they said I can go pick it up next week! So the wait is 2 weeks.

Now that being said, there was someone in line behind me who said he sent him passport thru the mail before the wait got longer, and they were able to trace it to someone's desk! It hadn't even been OPENED yet!! So he got copies of his id and did the in person thing.

Also, I went into the Surrey passport office at 11 am, and waited in the line for 40 minutes, then I got a number and waited two hours for that to be called, so in and out in three hours!
