The hormonal basis of falling in love has been discovered and the unfortunate truth is that passion is destined to fade inside of two years descending into a lifelong sentence of tedious cuddling and infrequent sex. This is the thrust of recent research into a class of hormones called neutrophins (notice the suffix is the same as endorphins, the feel good compounds).

In essence, the rush of new love and the mind-blowing monkey love that goes with it, the very thing that entices we men into relationships in the first place, is a result of increased levels of these hormones, along with the natural libido enhancer testosterone in women. Between the first and second years into a relationship these all natural wonder-drugs fade and in their place levels of oxytocin rise to “cement” the relationship. Oxytocin, known as the “cuddle-hormone”, is the very same hormone that is produced in new mothers, and facilitates bonding and intimacy.
