My ex gave 20 dollars to the push up guy one night. He did 20 push ups. My ex being drunk and watching a homeless guy do 20 push ups at 3 in the morning was pretty sad and disturbing. Giving 20 dollars to him was retarded. Bad memory.

i give money to the guys that hold the futureshop/winners door open at granville and robson. i feel like they are doing something useful and i want to encourage that, but i'd probably give them a lot more money if they weren't so dirty looking...
anyways, other than the above i don't give money to these people. i'm not interested in the whole pity/guilt industry.

i was in DC a couple summers ago (horrible trip, but that's neither here nor there). it was my second-last day in the city and i was basically just wandering around by myself, doing a bit of exploring/being angsty.
i walked by this homeless guy on crutches and he asked me if i had any change; i answered honestly and told him the only cash i had that i didn't need was a Canadian $20 bill. he started telling me about how he used to live in the Queen Charlottes where he worked on fishing boats...the two of us sat down on a park bench and had a great conversation for about 15 minutes.
he was a really nice guy, so i took him to lunch. we had sandwiches. he was incredibly appreciative, and at the end, when i had to leave, he very politely asked if i needed the canadian cash.
i gave it to him; i didn't need it there. it was one of the nicest moments i had while i was there, and in the midst of an emotionally draining trip this one guy helped me remember that there is human kindness in the world.
