Cops in Hamilton busted a few large-scale grow-ops and touted the seizure as "$15 million" in weed. I'm guessing they found roughly 15000 plants, which is no doubt a huge number, but it's hardly the 2-3 tonnes of weed they're making it sound like. Divide the number by 10 and it's probably a little more accurate.

Cops are stupid when it comes to calculating the figures of a Cannabis seizure, they usually make it sound sensational...

IE: 8KG'S of pot seized = 10,000 Street joints!

I have no idea where some of these RCMP Press releases get their street research from.

General public believes anything in the media related to drug culture.

Keep in mind that weed is a lot less common in Ontario than it is in BC though. But yeah, Cop math is ****ed when it comes to "street value". I heard a story about someone getting busted for 23 caps of E and they valued it at over $500.

Course, a major bust like this and... how does the marijuana flow get stifled? Oh, not at all.

I don't fault the police for sensationalizing their busts, they do that to secure funding and prove they're worth the tax dollars being thrown away on useless programs. However, I'd like to see the media step up and challenge the cops on their ridiculous press releases. Ian Mulgrew, of the Vancouver Sun, has a more critical approach when it comes to crime and policing. But, at the end of the day, editors need to sell papers and $15 million sounds better than $1.5 million.

Honestly the only pot busts that occur happen because of certain things:

- ridiculously large-scale operation
- operation that is prone to violence
- operation is involved in other harder drugs
- operation is stupid and tries to do things like bypass electrical meters and thus cause safety hazards.

If weed got legalized most if not all of these problems would disappear from the marijuana trade, save maybe the first, but in that case they'd just tax the crap out of them.

Since BC Hydro started releasing info about power consumption, many communities have passed bylaws allowing them 48 hour access to properties suspected of housing grows. The police are rarely interested in laying charges because they know the difficulty in prosecution and the lenient sentences given to most of those convicted. The big push now is to just drive it into other communities. The operators usually don't get busted, but they still get shut down. The negative side effect of this new initiative is many innocent people are being wrong-fully targeted as growers and their rights are being trampled by overzealous bureaucrats at City hall. Pending lawsuits might curtail the new bylaws, until then, many communities will continue to slap their little 48 hour notices on people's doors.

^^ hey shmoov.....these 'consumption' bylaws dont stop the REAL problem. the LARGE SCALE operations steal(bypass) power so these 'knock knock' bylaw busts arent gonna do squat

I don't even know why I bother with you, you're dumb as dirt. The original poster said only large scale grows get busted, etc. I pointed out that the small scale grows are being rooted out by the 48 hr inspections.

Those with bypasses aren't too hard to find either, since BC Hydro can source out electricity theft. So, large scale grows are moving to Gen-sets to get the job done. But you already knew that, cuz you're from the streets.

In any case, like you said, these bylaws are just going to push people to steal more power. BC Hydro ends up being the big loser.

bypasses are only easy to find when a location is under suspicion by po-lice, otherwise hydro is not actively seeking out power thieves...you are such a malaka poutso!!!
