don't you worry that someone from rogers, fido, or service providers from the US are often reading these forums?
I know of 4 retailers that have been pinched by Bell, Rogers, and Telus in the past 2 months.

Shouldn't be. It's my phone.

^^ haha
this is a straight copy/ paste from a post of mine in the subjectless thread:
"so, when the cell service providers ie Bell, Telus etc orders phones from the manufacturers ie Sanyo, Nokia etc, they order a specific model number;
with that specific model number, if a user wants that phone, they will have to go towards whichever cell service provider sells it.
Each of these models, in canada, at least, are "locked" because the cell companies do not want you to take the phone that they specifically ordered and use it on their competitors network.
Simple case of being a bitch to customers.
They are cell service providers, but are actually pimps that have cornered the market.
You simply cannot get a phone directly from the manufacturer and choose whoever you want for a cell service provider."
Although I do not agree with service providers locking the actual phones, it still is a reality. With that reality comes the fact that what retailers are doing ar jeopardizing the agreements that they have with the service providers (Bell, Telus, Rogers, Fido), which is possible grounds of termination of contract, ie selling the service providers phones.
Good luck, cell phone world guy!

unlikely

|

well
let's see what the webmasters at Rogers/Fido do with the link I just provided to them.
Maybe I can get a good samaritan discount on my bill?

^^ Ya gotta ask, how would they be able to represent those companies, recieve stock from them, as well as technical assistance, and pass along funds from each sale of the service providers product?
|

|
7/30/2008 3:54:00 PM
I would imagine they bring them over from Korea.
|

|
7/30/2008 4:00:00 PM
then how does the retailer access the service providers network, and set the ESN's to work on each providers network?
Ya gotta remember, the phone is a non-functioning unit without a service provider. To utilize the phone, the service providers network is required.
|

|
7/30/2008 4:15:00 PM
there is no ESN on GSM phones. That's CDMA (Telus and Bell)
With GSM you just unlock it and put in whichever provider's chip (sim card).
It's up to Rogers if they want to take an unlocked phone on their network, and it seems they always do.
|

|
7/30/2008 4:26:00 PM
you're right on the esn for gsm.
Although you may be correct about Rogers, i believe it may be easier to activate a non-rogers phone from a multiple cell service retailer than a corporate store.
Now if that's 100% true or not, i'm not too sure.

Wireless service provider does not prohibit the removal of the restriction lock, the warranty provided by wireless service provider will be voided if attempt to unlock the handset.
