Is there some sort of resource out there that lists the names of all the people in bc who are currently in jail?
Is this sort of thing public knowledge?

it should not be.
though you could confirm with our resident ceevee lawyer, kimia, and see if that falls under the privacy act or not.

Court records should be public, because anyone can go in and watch a trial so you could know who the person is and what sentence they get by attending the trial, so it would make sense that finding that information afterwards would be doable as well. However I think you'd have to look up someone's name in particular and find their actual trial report and its outcome...I don't think there's just a big list of everyone who's in jail.
Also Im not sure what kind of confidentiality policies are in place about court documents. At my practicum I work closely with the court system and adjudicated individuals and we have really strict confidentiality policies...basically I can't say nothin' to nobody. But I'm pretty sure those are agency policies not laws.
If you really want to find out, I'd start by asking at the police station...they might send you to the courthouse but it can be hard to find someone to talk to/give you information there which is why I'd start with the police. Or maybe city hall?

Court records, yes. Jail, no.
Daily court records appear online however it takes a few days for these to appear sometimes. Through the court records you can see if someone is remanded into custody.

Its pretty easy to determine as most remanded people remain in custody at local jails in the city where they are facing charges. If it is a bigger trial then they will go to Fraser pre-trial.
