A horrific occurence, but I personally am still unwavering in my stance against the death penalty.
I remember when I first came on CV 6-7 years ago there was a massive death penalty thread that went on and on, but suprisingly that particular issue has never really been raised again since then.

I don't care if death penalties don't stop people from committing crimes. I don't care that killing a criminal won't bring the victim back. I think that death is the ultimate punishment, and people who commit this type of crime deserve it.

Would you still support it if it led to higher murder rates? If it was used disproportionately on minorities? If it cost you more tax dollars?
No legitimate research supports the death penalty. It's only real purpose is revenge and even that usually provides little relief to victims' families.

What is the purpose of having someone like Clifford Olsen sitting in jail for the rest of his life? He will never get out. I say kill them.

The purpose is that Canada can claim to be a civilized country.
I'd rather have him sit in jail than have our justice system killing innocent people like the US. It's a reasonable trade off.

^ ^ Exactly. What's the point of punishing someone with the very thing we as a society are supposed to find abhorrent.
I'm not comfortable killing anyone, so why would I condone representatives of me doing it.
To me dying is the easy way out. Spending every waking hour with little to do but remember an atrocity I commited, having the scene reply itself in my mind and dreams would be the real hell.
