This guy my friend is dating didn't phone her when he said he would.
In fact, he almost never remembers to phone when he says he will.
Is there some way I could knock some sense into her next time she whines without looking like a total jerk??

Nope there isn't, that's what gets a chicks attention. If a guy calls all the time then he looks too needy and the girl won't be interested in him.

^^^ I agree, if your girl friend hasn't realized she is dating a douche then that is here problem and you shouldn't have to put up with her whining.

I would try to knock some sense into her without worrying about whether or not you look like a jerk. Tell her what you think of him and leave it at that, say that you won't bring it up again but ask her not to whine to you next time he acts like a douche. Hopefully she'll realize you were right all along?

just tell her that you used to like her but now that she is acting like a door mat you think she is a loser and don't want to hang out with her, but it's not too lat for her to shape up or ship out

Turns out she does have sense.
I just exaggerated about the whining.
And his not phoning backfired. She found better people to hang out with.
If not returning phone calls is your way of increasing sexual tension- you probably suck in bed.
