A tearful prisoner tried to assist with his own death after executioners spent two hours sticking a poison-filled syringe into his body during a botched killing.
Onlookers claimed that US death row prisoner Romell Broom appeared to be sobbing after one of many attempts to access his veins.
After more than two hours of injections, Broom’s lawyer sought a reprieve for his client, saying any further execution attempts “would be cruel and unusual punishment”.
The death by lethal injection was stayed for a week. Broom will face the same lethal injection procedure at that time.
Ohio’s execution laws require lethal injections to be “quick and painless”.
Broom was sentenced to death in an Ohio jail for the rape and murder of 14-year-old girl Tryna Middleton in Cleveland in 1984.
Some of Middleton's family members present to witness the execution were emotional afterward, prison spokeswoman Julie Walburn said.
"They were looking for closure and obviously they did not get that," she said.
Ms Walburn said Broom's veins had appeared to be accessible in a medical evaluation.
The Australian branch of anti-death penalty group Reprieve condemned the botched execution as "an extremely painful means of killing".
The group's Melbourne-based president, lawyer Rachel Walsh, said lethal injection involved a complex cocktail of drugs designed to induce heart failure and suffocation.
"US vets consider it too cruel to be used put down a dog," she said.
Ms Walsh said the botched killing was not an isolated incident.
"The dreadful suffering inflicted on Mr Broom in the name of American justice shows yet again that the death penalty is cruel and inhumane and has no place in a modern society such as the US.
"This is just the latest in a long list of appalling botched executions." In May 2006, Joseph Clark sat up to tell his executioners the drugs intended to render him unconscious were not working.
The state subsequently added a step to its execution protocol, requiring wardens to attempt to rouse condemned prisoners after an initial dose of sedatives was administered, but before the injection of lethal drugs.

I'd like to think the state is above the kind of behaviour that got Broom the death penalty. If not, they're no better.

Nope, but I'd also hope that the state could be more rational than someone related to the victim. Although, for what it's worth, my grandmother was murdered by some junkie loser and I'm not a fan of the death penalty.

Well, if you are not a "fan" of the death penalty then why comment just on the circumstances of this case.

I know you're not the brightest, but I thought you'd understand that my comment was directed at Feisty's take on the suffering endured by Broom's victim, you know, cuz it came right after it and all.

I'm not a fan of the death penalty either I just think the reasoning behind 'staying' the execution was waaaaay too rich for my liking.
Karma.

Not EVERYONE thinks you're stupid stranger.
Daisy I fail to see the selfishness in someone receiving negative Karma.
If I go about my days doing good all the time purely on the basis of receiving that in return then you could call one selfish.
