The Avengers (G) * * * *
Comical Chaos!
By ROBERT WALDMAN
Comic books come of age big time in The Avengers, a blockbuster if there ever was one. History has already been made as this movie has become the most successful opening weekend of any film ever; this Disney release is full value if you like spectacular action, a smart story, and adrenalin pounding pacing. Expect long line-ups at Empire Studio 12, Colossus and Cineplex Odeon Theatre across the universe as The Avengers is really heating things up at box offices throughout B.C. and all over North America.
Take a bow, Marvel Comics and creator Stan Lee for helming this brilliant send-up that brings your favourite fictional heroes together, though rather reluctantly. Here’s the story: the world is in big time as some mysterious power source has gone missing. Nick Fury, the director of the super secret U.S. Intelligence Agency called S.H.I.E.L.D. is put on the spot. Samuel L. Jackson’s alter ego is in a big jam so to try to remedy the situation he calls on some of his super hero friends to save the day. And quite a selling job it is.
Around the globe we go to round up the likes of Black Widow, Thor, The Hulk, Captain America and, oh, even Iron Man. Back in the swing of things are such fan favourites as Robert Downey, Jr. Scarlett Johannson, and Mark Ruffalo. Together this team and a few of their super hero friends must bond, overcome petty jealousies and get set to battle an evil alien force bent on conquering Earth. Can you say shazzam?
Wall to wall action, extremely clever banter between these larger than life characters, impressive special effects, huge monstrous sets, 3-D effects that actually work for a change for the most part, rousing music and time ticking tension riddled pacing make Marvel’s The Avengers a delight for comic book fans. It’s a dream movie of sorts with an all out battle to save Earth and great twists and turns along the way.
Not a dull moment takes place throughout this 2 hours and 20 minutes long movie that is full value for your entertainment dollar.
