About Harp and Shamrock
Opening the Harp is a rite of passage for Marquette University students. Saturday and Sunday mornings at 6 AM sharp the creaky doors of the Harp and Shamrock open and partygoers not yet done with their evening crawl in, joining third- shifters at the small, dingy bar. The one-room Harp is a dive, no question about it, but for those still drinking at 6am it's an oasis. A small pool table sits in the back on a slanted floor that growls in annoyance when anyone walks on it. College students and graduates, reliving college craziness, sit at the bar with grizzled veterans of the war against liquor. There's no caste system at the Harp, the customers are joined by a love of Johnny Cash tunes lamenting from the dated jukebox. If you're up to the task, a morning at The Harp and Shamrock goes on your things to do once in life list. -- S.M.
