About Mermaid An American Grille
It's hard to miss: a huge, upright mermaid statue sits on the roof and a stadium-sized lighted message-display advertises specials. The Mermaid is a true north-suburbs landmark, and its status is well earned. The Mermaid offers 30-plus lanes of bowling, a huge bar and grill with a standard but surprisingly broad menu, a separate nightclub featuring never-ending specials and promotions, and most recently an attached hotel for the weary traveler (or bowler). Like most places these days, the bowling alley turns out the lights for rock 'n' roll theme nights a couple times a week, and the nightclub DJ spins retro and Top 40, depending on which night you go. The bar and grill food is quite good; try the "comfort food" menu selections, featuring old-fashioned open-faced hot sandwiches. -- Jon Hilgers
