About Big Bang
How it All Began

The dueling piano sing-a-long format has its origins at Pat O’Brien’s in New Orleans. The music of choice was Dixieland, 40’s and 50’s music, and the concept had tremendous success. In the 1980’s the concept was changed to include both new and old music and some audience participation. Sam Leatherwood began performing this style of entertainment at a nightclub in Dallas, Texas.

In 1991, Sam joined a new company with the goal of expanding the concept further, the focal point being two baby grand pianos and a team of entertainers that perform classic and contemporary music designed to get their audience involved in every aspect of a "high energy" show. As the Entertainment Director for this newly formed company, Sam’s job was to recruit and train entertainers in the sing-a-long concept. He went on to open twelve clubs in the U.S. and two in the Netherlands.

Upon moving to San Antonio, Texas in 1995, Sam met Meredyth Nichols who was the General Manager of the new club on the Riverwalk. The two worked together to build this piano bar into the most successful club in the company’s history. After six years on the Riverwalk together, Sam and Meredyth were ready to open a place of their own. They were joined by Sam’s brother George Leatherwood, and the three partners opened their first club, The Big Bang, in the historic Laclede’s Landing in St. Louis, Missouri in May of 2001. The Big Bang was a resounding success. Together with a group of extremely talented performers and bar staff, The Big Bang grew to become one of St. Louis’ most successful and popular nightclubs. Soon it became apparent that the company was strong enough to expand to new markets, and the Phoenix area was first on the list.

The Big Bang is exactly what it should be: a big square room with plenty of tables and chairs and a saloon-style bar with plenty of options. A slightly elevated stage is home to two pianos, which your hosts for the evening will caress, bang and tickle until everyone in the audience has been made fun of or heard their fill of Bon Jovi and Billy Joel. Don't forget to leave a tip with your song requests!
